They sat leaning against the brick wall, legs sticking out in front of them at an odd angle that shouldn’t have been comfortable for a human, but nobody appeared to notice. That was something they had noticed about the students here, while most were incredibly intelligent they weren’t particularly observant of their surroundings.

Although if their experience as a student thus far was any indication, everyone was most likely just exhausted. It was a nice school, no place fancy, just a small community college in a small town. But it was perfect for them.

They looked up with a sigh as thunder rumbled in the distance. It wasn’t exactly the nicest of days, the sky was dark and threatening, wind blowing and kicking up dead leaves and litter on the sidewalk. It wouldn’t be long before rain started to fall.

But as people quickly came and went, a few nearly tripping over their outstretched legs, they just watched in fascination. They didn’t mind the weather, in fact it reminded them of home. Of course, unobservant or not, people would begin to take notice if they were to see someone sitting outside in the rain, not a care in the world.

And so they reluctantly got up from the cold, hard, and yet oddly comfortable concrete. Their legs wobbled a bit as they forced them into a slightly more human position. As much as they loved the earth and it’s people, fitting in was rather exhausting.

The campus was small and the dorms weren’t far, it probably wouldn’t take more than a few minutes to get back. They wondered if their roommate would be there, most likely not, but then perhaps that was a good thing.

They sighed softly, breath puffing out in front of them in the cold air. It wasn’t that they didn’t get along, in fact their roommate is probably one of the nicest people they’d met on earth so far. Not that they’d met many people at this s point, but still, it means something. No, the problem was them and their clumsy inhuman habits, often times strange behavior, and their frustrating inability to hold a human form while asleep or otherwise distracted.

It was something that they needed to work on, that much was clear.

The walk back was pleasant, if a bit quiet. Most of the other students had already made in inside, leaving the sidewalk and somewhat  overgrown lawn empty. The wind was slowly but surely picking up, nearly knocking their hat off of their head.

“Sal?” A voice suddenly called out from behind them. “Is that you?”

They spun around, choking back a scream. So, they were a bit jumpy, they certainly weren’t expecting that, having assumed that they were alone. But there, a few paces back, was their roommate, Fray. He had a backpack tossed over his shoulder and a grin on his face.

“Fray! H-hey!” They laughed, pulling their beanie down tighter over their head. “W-what’re you doing here I thought you’d be.. uh.. well I didn’t think you’d be here.”

He held up a little white paper bag that was clutched in his hand. “Got  us some donuts!”

“Donuts?”

“Yeah, here.” He passed the bag to them happily. “Have some, I already had one on the walk home.”

“Oh, thanks…” They’d never tried donuts before, though the name sounded familiar. Cautiously they opened the bag and peeked inside, immediately a sweet smell hitting them. Inside were small round pastries that resembled wheels. A few had some white, flakey looking stuff covering it. The other was all powdery.

Even after having been on earth for almost two months, Sal still hadn’t tried much of the food the planet had to offer. In fact, their diet has consisted almost entirely of toast, pizza, and instant noodles. There was also what Fray called “fast food”  although they didn’t quite understand what that actually meant.

After a moment of staring into the bag, Sal hesitantly picked out the powdery one and took a bite, the white powder getting all over their chin and shirt much to the amusement of Fray. Soon Sal’s eyes widened at the taste, a grin spreading across their face.

It was amazing. Of all of the things they’d tasted on earth so far, this was easily the most delicious.

“I know they’re a bit stale, they gave me yesterday’s leftovers half price.” Fray chuckled, walking along beside Sal.

“What?” They scrunched their eyebrows, staring down at the donut. “Stale?”
donuts.
